They can qualify those that interest them and disqualify those that do not. You can strike up an online conversation with people that you have hobbies and interests in common and get to know them a bit better. However, the more specific you are with your criteria, the less contacts you will have. But when someone does contact you they will more likely fit the criteria that you are looking for.
