What is the Secret?

The Secret DVD was released in the latter part of 2006. Since then the film, which has only been released on DVD and streamed on the internet, has become an international hit. It's incredible success is due as much to the innovative way the film has been marketed as to the quality of the film. Although the film is certainly interesting and inspiring in many ways, I feel that it perhaps is even more successful and instructive as a lesson in marketing and promotion. But first, what is the film about?

The Secret is about the law of attraction. The law of attraction is a teaching that has been around for many years and in essence states that what you focus on, you attract. Or as Mike Dooley says in the movie, "Thoughts becomes Things". If your mind tends to obsess about things that it doesn't want, as most of our minds tend to do, then we will tend to attract more of the same.

For example, if you are worried about the bills that you are having trouble paying and keep thinking about how terrible it all is, how come I never have enough money, why does this always happen to me, then the law of attraction states that you will attract more bills, more debt, more of the same. We are like magnets and attract whatever our dominant vibration is.

This may sound like a bunch of new-age mumbo-jumbo and if presented in a superficial manner I agree that it is. However, I have no doubt and science has pretty much proved that our mind has a profound effect on our body and it is not too much of a stretch to see that in many ways how we think also effects our relationships, our finances and certainly our motivation to accomplish anything. And with all the new the research coming out of the fields of quantum physics, brain scanning, etc. there is enough intriguing data to suggest that perhaps we actually do have an effect beyond our immediate physical body.

The Secret is more documentary than drama. The film features many well-known teachers of the secret such as Bob Proctor, Joe Vitale, Jack Canfield and John Assaraf among others and interspersed between their presentations little dramas are offered to help illustrate the subject. If you have seen the film "What the Bleep Do We Know", then you have a good idea of the style.

The marketing of this film was brilliant. Beginning about a year before the films release a short trailer was created. This trailer was incredibly intriguing. Everyone was wondering "What is the Secret"? The film's participants, many of whom are master marketers, promoted this trailer to their customers. They were also sworn to secrecy as to what the secret was.

This created a great deal of curiosity and turmoil. I remember seeing in many forums irate students wondering why they had not been taught the secret, why were things being held back from the students. This put the teacher in an awkward position and he/she was forced to say that the students already had been taught the secret but because the teacher was sworn to secrecy they couldn't tell them exactly what that was. As you can imagine, this created a huge thirst for this film. People just had to know what the secret was.

Well, those who have seen the movie now know. And if you would like to really understand what the secret is all about, I guess you will just have to see the movie yourself.
