Trousseau - Then and Now

The sexual revolution of the 1960's resulted in many changes in attitudes and customs. Women were burning their bras, and girdles were doomed as pantyhose were being developed. Women were taking ownership of their sexuality. They would no longer be sexual objects, but sexual beings. We've come a long way, and the feminist movement must be given credit for many of these changes.

Those changes included the wedding trousseau. The trousseau in some form as been part of human culture for thousands of years. From a time when all a woman (actually, a young girl) possessed was considered her trousseau, to Victorian times when a trousseau was an entire wardrobe that included a lifetime supply of lingerie, to more modern times, engagement has been a time for gathering linens, household items and new lingerie to fill a "hope chest." Ironically, today new lingerie gets little attention!

What belongs in your own trousseau? All of those same items. Gift registries have made it easy for everyone to know exactly which toaster you prefer, and what china pattern you have selected. For modern brides, gifts for the home accumulate quickly at engagement, shower, and wedding parties, thanks to the generosity of friends and family. Items taken from one's former home help to fill in the balance.

So what's left to purchase for the modern trousseau? More and more it is lingerie shopping that is left up to the bride herself. Don't overlook these items when shopping for your honeymoon, as a new lingerie wardrobe is just as important as that new set of pots!

Choose lingerie that makes sense for your lifestyle, and lingerie that you love. Choose lingerie that defines who you are, the person you want to be as you start your new life as a wife. Choose clothes that make you feel sexy, special and confident. Seek out lingerie shops where you will find expert advice and can be properly fitted.

Even if you normally sleep in a T-shirt, a short, sexy, white-satin chemise can certainly help you feel like a bride on your wedding night. And the groom will likely appreciate your new trousseau, too.

For your honeymoon you'll want several enticing nightgowns, but don't forget to have the proper apparel for outdoor activities too. Include bras and panties in black, white and nude for your basic wardrobe. Or choose lingerie in fashion forward styles and colors for a little more flair. Consider camisoles that go from daywear to evening to the bedroom.

Whatever you choose, make your trousseau a "treasure chest" of luxuries that have meaning and celebrate you.
