The Vicious Effect of Anorexia Nervosa

Do you or someone you know have anorexia? If you do, you need to continue reading this article. It might be a matter of life and death. Denying the body the vital nutrients it needs for proper function can make anorexia a brutal disorder to overcome.

Over a quarter of a million people deal with this disorder at any one time, and it seems to target women; in particular young women. It can have a devastating and irreversible effect on the body - and without treatment, eventually a person with anorexia succumbs to starvation.

It can impact the body and mind in other ways. Here are a few of the effects it can have on an otherwise healthy person:

• Isolation from family and friends - The guilt and shame one feels about either the problem, or their inability to 'control' their weight may send a person with anorexia into seclusion. This can be dangerous - the disorder needs to be treated with the help and support of family and friends.

• Drug and alcohol dependence - There can be feelings of extreme guilt, depression and shame associated with anorexia. It can lead a person to the point where they believe drugs and alcohol are the only 'escape' from the way they feel - ultimately leading to a dangerous dependence on a number of chemicals. This has obvious underlying health issues related to it.

• Head to toe effect - Here are some of the noticeable physical effects of anorexia: hair loss, dry skin, yellow skin (jaundiced), decrease in musculature and swollen joints. Not so noticeable are: memory and concentration problems, decreased oxygen transfer with the lack of red blood cells being manufactured due to loss of nutrients, reproductive problems, lack of nutrients for proper organ function (can lead to renal failure).

• Lowered immune response - Without the proper nutrients, the body is not able to produce the appropriate immune response when you are sick. This can lead to larger health problems and a constant battle with other ailments.

• General fatigue - Without iron and other nutrients, essential for red blood cell development, the body can become anemic and result in constant physical fatigue.

Unfortunately, for those that do not receive treatment for anorexia, the end result can be death or severe damage to the internal structure of their body. This can be devastating to family and friends and does not need to happen. Anorexia is treatable, and with the loving help and support from family and friends, it can be overcome.

Don't let yourself or a loved one become a victim to this disease. If you suspect anorexia, then you should seek the help of a qualified professional.
