There are many things you must prep for when you have a child on the way. You will probably spend hours decorating and shopping for the nursery. When doing this, remember that nothing is more important than the crib. Regardless of the type of crib you decide to get, be sure that it conforms to all safety guidelines and standards. The guidelines are fairly basic, from what you should and should't keep in it, and how it should fit together. One important thing to remember about the crib and your child, is that you shouldn't keep sheets, blankets, or pillows in it until the baby is at least one year old. Items such as these introduce the possibility of your child's breathing being obstructed. While your baby is sleeping, the only accessory that should potentially be in there is perhaps, a small foam wedge. Wedges such as these are sometimes used to prevent babies from rolling onto their stomach. Many experts recommend having your baby sleep on his or her back or side at first. The most important part of any nursery is the crib. You want to make it safe and cozy. No matter what type of crib you get, make sure it conforms to all safety guidelines and standards. Make sure the crib mattress fits snugly against the rails, so the baby can't get wedged between them. You also want to be sure the crib sheet fits snug and tight, nothing loose or bunched up. While your child is sleeping, make sure to keep in mind what you are dressing your baby in. You should make sure that what they are wearing is clean, soft, appropriately fitting, and overall, appropriate for his or her age and for the temperature in the room. Remember that babies have no say in what they are wearing so it is up to you to make reasonable choices. Don't put them in anything far too light or far too heavy for the given circumstances. If you are keeping a scent in the room, make sure it is subtle. This goes for detergent for your child as well. Many parents use unscented detergent. Be certain that you are keeping fresh, clean sheets/accessories in the crib, including their sleepwear. As with scent, keep the amount of dust subtle or non-apparent. One way to do this is by minimizing the amount of objects under the crib so it won't accumulate. You can also dust and open windows. Remember that colors have an effect on everyone, so use sheeting and color schemes, which are accommodating to that thought. Too much color may cause your baby to be restless and therefore crabby and awake. The nursery should be an inviting, secure place. Try using soft and restful colors for your baby.
