Pug Breeders - Everything You'll Ever Need To Know

As the pug becomes more and more popular everyday, new breeders start to show up all over the country and the rest of the world. Unfortunately many of them know very little about breeding pugs. Some people believe that pug breeding can be a good way to make money and this is their only drive. This cannot and must not be the only reason for breeding pugs. The best breeders have spent their whole lives producing healthy looking pugs and are unfortunately loosing their livelihoods due to the fact that there are more breeders to choose from. It is important to know the difference between a good breeder and a bad one.

The Things To Look For In A Pug Breeder

The first thing you need to look for in a pug breeder is the environment they choose to keep their dogs in. If the place is unclean and unprofessional looking, then I would suggest not buying your pug from this person. Generally speaking, if they can't even look after their own house then how do you think they would treat their own pets. Secondly, how do they treat their pugs? If they are constantly angry with their dogs , then there is a likelihood that their puppies have started off their life in traumatic circumstances. This isn't to say that you should just turn around, walk out the door and neglect all the puppies you have just seen. If you're like me, you would probably want to do something like perhaps report the issue to the local authorities. The last thing you should check out in a pug breeder is their reputation in the pug community. Are they well known? Have they ever bred any dogs that have gone on and done well in the show arena? In the world of purebred dogs, reputation is everything and breeders with bad reputations should be steered clear of. Of course these are just guidelines. Most new pug breeders do a good job raising their pups so don't take this too seriously!

What To Look For In A Pug

For showing purposes there are three different characteristics you need to look for in a pug. The first is their ears. A show pugs ears must not be too big or too small for their face. This immediately turns judges away. The second thing you need to look for is the length of their legs. Traditionally judges tend to look for pugs with shorter legs. Long legged and more athletic pugs are not as popular in the show arena. The last thing you need to look for is whether or not the pug has the right personality for showing. It should be playful but not too playful, well disciplined and socially capable, meaning that it enjoys the company of other dogs, not just pugs.
