With so many international companies entering the United Kingdom and Europe, the role of the logistics manager is more important than at any other time in the past. Before you think of that role, its important to understand what the role of the logistics manager is and how this position relates to the entire concept of supply management. We know that the purchasing manager is directly responsibility for the purchasing or products for the company, but the logistics manager is responsible for managing all of the processes that are involved in the supply chain including leasing with suppliers of raw materials, manufacturers, retailers, and even possibly the consumer. They coordinate all of the processes with the potential of satisfying the customer. They must be aware of any outside influences that may affect the processes such as legislation. Some companies may have a distribution manager within the logistics area who will handle transportation, stock control, and warehousing. His job is to ensure that all structures are in place and to monitor the flow of goods and materials that enter the companys inventory or distribution areas. Information Technology also plays a key role in the logistics field with the implementation of complex systems that are capable forecasting stock levels, delivery times, transport costs, and evaluate performance. Although the duties of the logistics will vary based upon the specific job role and the type of company for which he works, some of the typical activities he may perform include the following: #Monitor the quality, cost, and efficiency of both the movement and storage of goods #Coordinate and control the order cycle including any associated information systems #Analyze data to allow for monitoring performance and plan any necessary improvements #Allocate and manage staff resources based upon changing needs #Leasing and negotiating with customers and suppliers #Develop the business as needed by analyzing logistical problems and developing new solutions If the logistics manager is managing a warehouse or transport staff, he may also have the following duties: #Implement safety and health procedures #Manage training issues for staff #Motivate team members #Project management #Setting of department objectives The position of the logistics manager will vary largely based upon the type of company for whom he works and whether he must also act as transportation and/or warehouse manager. No matter what the capacity of his role, he must be the kind of person who is willing and able to negotiate and know how to deal with people on a daily basis. Negotiating skills are pertinent in this position, as is the ability to converse with people on various levels of management.
