Everything is more expensive these days. I am only 44 years old and I can remember when gas was less than fifty cents a gallon, a nice house was thirty thousand and a great new car for less than ten thousand. All of these are now multiplied several times and so are shoes! With the increase in the price of shoes it is even more imperative that we take better care of our shoes. One of the easiest things we can do it to start at home with keeping our shoes cleaned, conditioned, polished and weatherproofed. Many people like to use shoe trees to help shoes keep their shape while also helping to reduce moisture which goes a long way to making shoes last longer and reducing odor. The best type of shoe tree for this is to use one constructed of cedar. One tip you can use to make the soles of your shoes lat longer is to apply temporary protective soles over the sole of your shoes which will make them last longer. Another thing that many people do not think about is to make sure the heels are balanced properly. Most people have an uneven gait and if this is left unchecked it results in uneven wear on your shoes. Go to a specialist who can identify your problem areas and give you inserts that will correct the problem. Many people are at a loss when it comes to caring for their leather dress shoes but this need not be the case. It is a simple process. First clean your shoes with a good all purpose leather cleaner to remove loose dirt, then use a leather conditioner to keep the leather soft and lubricated. After this, you will apply polish which will give your leather shoes the sought after shine and help to protect them. Lastly, apply a good weatherproofing product that will keep the leather protected from rain and snow. If you have exotic leather shoes or boots made from leathers such as lizard, snakeskin, or alligator for example, you will want to use a milder cleaner so that the scales are not damaged. The best practice for maintaining your dress shoes is to take the time to care for them on a daily basis. Don't wait for a problem to arise. The old adage of "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" applies here as well. If you invest a couple of hundred dollars in a high quality pair of men's dress shoes it only makes sense to take car of them and make them last as long as possible.
