Leather: For Fashion and Safety

Not many people know why many bikers wear leather apparel including jackets, vest, chaps and boots. Is it cause it looks cool and rebellious? Maybe. Is it because the black helps them keep cool? Maybe. But, really, the main reason why bikers even started wearing leather jackets is for safety.

If you have ever been in any type of motorcycle accident big or small, you know what safety if of huge concern. There is nothing between and the ground once the motorcycle looses control. With that in mind, more and more bikers started wearing leather. Not only does it look "cool", leather also acts as another layer of skin (in fact it is skin!) and protects you from any motorcycle accidents.

Now with this said, not all leather types are best for bikers. When purchasing leather clothing, you should take into consideration:

1. The type of leather the clothing is made of.

Not all Leathers are Created Equal
Let's start at the top. The best and most expensive leather grains are full-grain. These are made from high quality hides and the imperfections have been removed. For optimum full grain, choose naked leather. This is the best and most desired leather for riding.

Also, recommended for riding is top grain leather. This is a very strong leather. Not as sought after by riders, this is a cheaper alternative to naked leather.

Finally, the finished split leather. This type is not suggested for riding, but looks great for casual outfits. Before making a purchase think of your needs and find the leather type for your lifestyle

2.Your area's climate.

It's a known fact that wearing leather does not cool you down. It's hot! If you live in a more winter climate, I suggest finding a snugly fit jacket for warmth or you can even add a vest underneath. For those in warmer climates, you want a leather that can breath. Look for vents in clothing for added circulation of air. Just remember, water and leather don't mix, so be careful when wearing leathers during rainy or snowy days. If you do get it wet, don't try to dry it too quickly, let it dry naturally. Oil can also be added.

Purchasing any leather gear is exciting, but keep in mind these few tips and you are sure to look good, feel good, and to be safe. Enjoy the ride.
