How To Recognize The Link Between Hypothyroidism and Infertility

Hypothyroidism and infertility issues are often linked together and this vexing problem is one that not only affects women but men as well. While it's true that patients with hypothyroidism are in the main, infertile, it is also true that women can still have the disease and get pregnant. While this may sound a little confusing let's examine the issue a little more closely.

It's established fact that thyroid disease can cause problems in the process of getting pregnant. During pregnancy, hypothyroidism, if left untreated, can impair the normal development stage to a certain extent. If you are having problems conceiving then run this simple test before you suspect infertility may be a given.

Hypothyroidism And Infertility

1. Ascertain whether a member of your family may be or has suffered from thyroid problems.
2. Your periods are coming at irregular intervals.
3. You have been having unprotected sex for at least four to six months without any results.
4. There is a history of miscarriages.

If you answer yes to two or more of these questions, then if you haven't done so, getting a thyroid test is crucial. Generally, women will be tested for hypothyroidism and infertility issues at their initial evaluation. When hypothyroidism is the issue, ovulation and menstruation irregularities can occur because there is not enough time between the two for conception to occur.

Connection Between Hypothyroidism And Infertility

So, the question has to be asked... is there a connection between the two? The answer is yes. Treatment of hypothyroidism or in other words, an underactive thyroid, is just another important process in treating infertility. While full restoration of fertility is not guaranteed with thyroid replacement therapy, at least there is a strong chance of conception although associated treatments will more than likely be necessary once hypothyroidism has been treated.

The process could take several months with close monitoring but the aim of replacement therapy is to provide the body with enough thyroid levels to kick start body functions to normal levels.

Why Is Treatment For Hypothyroidism Required

Essentially, changes in estrogen levels can occur affecting thyroid function. When pregnant, dosage levels may be altered which can affect hormone fluctuations for several weeks. You will be monitored closely during the first three months of pregnancy. A baby's thyroid gland isn't fully developed during the first 3-4 months of it's life and it depends on the mother's supply of thyroid hormones. This is the time when a baby is at risk from developmental issues or a mother is most at risk from miscariage. Thyroid hormone replacement should continue right throughout the pregnancy.
