Many of us sit at computers for long hours at home and at work. We get used to less than adequate equipment and often think that our aches and pains are normal. Not the serious kind of pain that comes with carpal tunnel and can't be ignored, just a stiff neck more often than not, a chronically tired lower back and maybe a little eyestrain, for example. We get used to the kind of chair we sit in and the height of the computer we live with hour after hour...day after day. We usually don't even think about the brightness setting. Ergonomically designed chairs quite often come with healthy price tags yet it's a simple kindness to your self to check them out on the web and find a place where you can go try them out. Go to several different places and talk to their salespeople. Some authorities say your monitor should be around two feet from your body. Where is yours? Have you ever given it any thought? Have you ever asked someone to help you measure to see if your eyes, when focused dead ahead, are one inch below the top of your PC, as recommended? How about your lighting? Are you putting up with fluorescent tubes just because they're "there"? Is there anything that can be done about that? People who wear bifocal and trifocal glasses often have a lot to cram into a small field of vision. It may be wise to get a pair of mid-range glasses to keep by your computer to give you a broader view of your screen without having to hold your neck in a single position for protracted periods of time. Whether you work at home or in an office that is provided by another person, you have the right to look closely at the long-term health and comfort issues connected with your job. Check out available seminars on the subject and see what you can find out that may pay off both now and later on. Retirement may seem like a long way off and maybe it is, but you will want to be able to play when the time comes. What do experts recommend regarding how long you should sit at a time and how you should stretch and exercise when you get up and move around? There is information out there that relates to the specifics of your particular situation. The point is, don't "just sit there" and wish years from now that you had been more pro-active. Now is the time to check it out and do something about it.
