One of the ways that you can protect yourself from an allergic attack is to use an air purifier or a filter at your home. Allergens such as dust particles, pollen grain are often transmitted through the air that we breathe, causing allergies. So it would be logical that by using an air purifier you can keep these air borne allergens. Air Filters An air purifier cleans the air of all impurities. While some of the equipment needs replacement often, as they start wearing out, other models work by a method of ionization whereby particles are forced to stick on an exterior platform and are later sucked in by the machine. It will be good to have an air purifier in each room of your house. If you cannot afford that, you might want to try out a portable purifier, which you can carry as you move from one area to another. High Efficiency Particulate Air filter The most efficient system of air purifying is done through the High Efficiency Particulate Air filter (HEPA). These filters are very useful in removing the smallest particle suspended in the air. It can trap the common causes of allergies transmitted through air such as pollen and dust mites. Keep Your Surroundings Clean Warding off an allergy through an air filter has to be accompanies by other preventive measures that will keep your surroundings free from dust. The first thing to do is to keep your home allergen-free. Avoid putting carpets on the floor. Instead, go for floors made of hardwood. Use dehumidifiers, as dampness allows moulds to grow. If you are allergic to flower pollen, reduce houseplants and wear masks when you cut grass. If you happen to go out a lot, make sure you regularly bathe to remove all pollen that may be stuck on you. And if you like walking in the park, then reduce the time spent there to the minimum. While air filters is a good way of keeping away dust from your home, one must make sure that exposure to dust and allergy causing factors are minimal. Other effective treatments for allergies Another common treatment for allergies is using a set of medications called antihistamines, which prevent the formation of histamines that are the main cause of allergy. The best example of such antihistamine is Benadryl that will reduce your allergies effectively. The other common over-the-counter drugs that are required for treating allergies include decongestants, bronchilators [for treating asthma related allergies], and allergy shots. The allergy shots are given in the form of vaccines but you should make sure about the amount of medication is needed to produce the desired effect in controlling allergic reactions.
