Acne - An Introduction To The Disease

Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that causes huge spots on the face, shoulders, and upper backs and even sometimes in the entire body of a person. It all begins with the formation of a comedo, an enlarged hair follicle that gets plugged with excess of oil and bacteria. The comedo occurs beneath the skin surface and usually remains invisible to the naked eye. When it gets it's favorable conditions, it germinates to form an inflamed lesion, called acne.

Causes for acne

Acne can be different for different people. Whether it's the age or the bad skin conditions, acne can occur anytime in anyone most severely or even mildly. Although the dermatologists have failed to give the true cause of acne, yet some of the causes can be guessed. Hormonal changes, which are very common during puberty, can cause acne. During the developing years, the hormones can stimulate the sebaceous glands, which can create excess of sebum, and when this sebum clogs the pores, then you might get an attack of acne.

Another major cause of acne is heredity. When the genes pass on from the parents to the child, the acne germs also seem to pass on from the mother to the child, which germinates at a later stage on receiving the proper conditions. The acne conditions come highest during the teenage years when androgens hormones stimulate to create excess amount of oil. Some of the oil glands get choked by this thick bacterium, which bursts on the surface of the face as whiteheads or closed comedome. There is an inflammatory reaction on the face, which is red and eventually bursts out as a pustule. The oxygen present in the air then help to change the color to black and then the acne can be more commonly called as an open comedome or blackhead.

Effective ways to treat acne

Taking good care of acne can prevent the disease effectively. Fortunately there are many precautions that can be taken to prevent acne. Topical acne treatments include usage of mild antiseptic astringents to even stronger and coarser chemical solutions that aid in removing the dead layer of skin cells. This removing of the skin cells unblocks the skin pores and frees the sebum content in the skin. Lotions like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or retinoic acid [Vitamin A] are most effective ingredients to reduce acne.

Another natural way to prevent acne is cleansing your skin at least twice daily with an antiseptic or medicated cleanser. You can use topical creams and lotions to remove the dirt and oil on top of the skin but make sure that you do not use too much of these cleansers. Excess use of cleansers can prove detrimental to your skin. Some other ways to prevent acne is exfoliating the skin using topical antibiotics, phototherapy, and oral antibiotics and treating hormonal disorder.

Consume lots of fruits and vegetables. If you cannot have the whole fruit, you can start having the juices extracted out of the fruits.

Treat acne effectively to lead a happy and healthy life.
